Internal linking template tool for content silos

Optimizing a website’s structure is not only a fundamental principle for good SEO and search engines such as Google, but for a better user-experience.

What are content silos?

In a semantic web, content silos are a way of organizing related information within a website. Think of a silo like a chapter in a book. A great example to consider is always Wikipedia.

How to use the tool?

Just copy & page your URLs in the table below and hit the “Generate link template” button.

  • The “Money page” field is your main target page. Could be a main blog category, product category or product page.
  • The “Support page” are surrounding pages that break down the topic of the main page, for example a blog article.

Content silos best practices

  • Test, test and test again. Best practices are a good indicator but every website is different
  • Try to link to only one target page and don’t get too excited and start linking everywhere
  • Follow the suggested link structure but don’t forget to think of your users and their query satisfaction
  • Make sure links have descriptive anchor texts and try to avoid “Click here!” anchor texts.
  • Use a Schema FAQ Generator tool whenever applicable to occupy more search visibility
  • And make sure that the links are placed within the main body content of the HTML

There are already great resources out there on content silos and information architecture that are worth mentioning and linking out to, so I won’t be going in to details in this page. Also chances are you already know or were reading about content silos and landing here so check the bottom of the page for references.

Results of using content silos

What you see in the above GSC screenshot is something beautiful.

The client was ranking for their main target page on average position 9.

After we created the small topical cluster with about 8 pieces of content, not only these content pages were ranking on average on position 1-3, but the main target page also jumped to position #3.

So what happened, is that the surrounding content, helped also push the main category (money page) we set our internal links to.
